Wedding Package Sold Separately

The Gilded Wren’s first wedding at sea is on Friday at five. On Wednesday morning, the bride’s son is not in his cabin.

The ship isn’t calling at any port this week, so Gary Pinnock is aboard or he isn’t. His phone turns up on the closed top deck, zipped into a sandwich bag. Beside it are the groom’s reading glasses. And the groom, a retired bank clerk from Stockport, won’t say where he was at midnight.

Peggy Nunn is the ship’s Director of Guest Delight and, thanks to a typing error, its Purser, which makes her the woman who is supposed to marry them. She has three hundred passengers searching the ship with clipboards, a Brand Director who calls it a welfare walk, a chef whose sausage rolls keep disappearing, and until noon on Friday.

Nobody dies. Somebody has a great deal of explaining to do.
