The Gilded Wren is down to three working decks. Thirty-nine sea-view cabins look directly at plywood. Naturally, somebody decides this is the perfect time to celebrate the ship’s heritage.
Then former shipyard painter Alan Skelton is found dead beneath a fallen partition in the new Heritage Lounge.
It looks like an accident. It ought to be an accident. The same wall had already tried to fall down once that week, and very little aboard stays attached without encouragement.
But four screws are missing. Three wedges are lying where they should not be. And Skelton’s photograph album has disappeared.
On a vessel where almost everything is broken, the difficult question is not what failed. It is who helped it.
