The Gilded Wren Mysteries · Book two
A Passenger Short
Deck Eleven is closed for enhancement. Nobody is enhancing anything. There is a chain across the head of the stair, a sign that says COMING SOON, and a tarpaulin strapped down over a swimming pool with no water in it.
Mrs Enid Charteris is aboard on the fourth night. On the fifth she is not. The company reports it inside the hour, turns the ship, and points every instrument it has at the sea — which is the difficulty, because no death has been reported aboard. Peggy has no inquiry, no power to make anybody answer, and nothing behind her but the fact that she is the one who asked.
No body. No witness. And a door log that has been an hour wrong since February.
